Michele A. Kliem, Ph.D. is a patent agent for Duane Morris' Intellectual Property Practice Group, in which capacity she assists attorneys with patent prosecution and litigation. Dr. Kliem's background includes extensive pharmacological laboratory work. Dr. Kliem's research in neuroscience focused on the role of the basal ganglia in the modulation of movement under normal conditions and in Parkinson's disease. She designed a combination microelectrode recording-injection device to deliver very small quantities of drugs to locally test their effects on cellular discharge properties of individual neurons in vivo. These experiments were carried out along with a series of microdialysis and electron microscopy studies to better understand the function and location of dopamine receptors and their role in the modulation of GABA neurotransmission.
Dr. Kliem currently holds a faculty position at the Georgia Institute of Technology Department of Applied Physiology where she teaches a Health Performance Science course. Her experience also includes working as a pharmacologist for Eli Lilly and Co.
Dr. Kliem received a Ph.D. in pharmacology from Emory University in 2008. She completed her postdoctoral studies at Emory University Department of Neurosurgery. Dr. Kliem’s postdoctoral research focused on the delivery of molecular therapeutics to anatomically defined targets for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. She concentrated on therapies (drug-loaded polyketal microparticles and bacterial plasmids) aimed to improve motor disability associated with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis using a transgenic rat model of the human disease. She also holds an M.S. in pharmacology from the University of Toledo and a B.S. in biology from Ashland University.
