Johnson first rode into office on the Trump wave of 2016, and since then has become a respected member of a group of reformist Republican congressmen who are vowing to fix Washington.
These articles are translations from a weekly column in Russian in Komsomolskaya Pravda, Russia's largest daily newspaper, explaining the US to a Russian audience, focusing on the battle for free speech and the media landscape.
One of the central themes of this column is the historic struggle unfolding in America, a struggle with huge consequences for Russia and the rest of the world. It would not be taking place at all if not for the revolution in information technology, and the unprecedented amount of sunlight our new information age is shining into the dark corners of American politics, and the cockroaches who thrive there.
The new house speaker, Mike Johnson, is a product, and hero, of this revolution, and that he has very unexpectedly ended up in the speaker’s chair, is a stroke of luck for America and the rest of the world. He very much represents a new generation of elected officials who are both idealistic and competent, and I think believable in their determination to reform and US politics. The best observers on the left and the right are cheering.
Johnson first rode into office on the Trump wave of 2016, and since then has become a respected member of a group of reformist Republican congressmen who are vowing to fix Washington. So far they have scored some important successes, led by congressman Matt Gaetz, another young reformer hero, first by forcing the previous speaker, Kevin McCarthy, a spineless ‘swamp’ jellyfish, and deep state toady, to agree to their reform plans, and then, when he broke his promises, booting him out of the speaker’s chair, just as they promised they would when they installed him.
To get a sense of the man, I highly recommend watching Glenn Greenwald’s discussion of Johnson’s election. Greenwald is one of the most influential journalists broadcasting in the US, fighting back mightily against deep state censorship, FBI abuses, and endless wars. He is against US support of Ukraine and Israel. His audience and influence is one of the biggest in the English speaking world, but especially in the US. The fact that men like Greenwald, Tucker Carlson, and many others with huge audiences, are fighting daily against the rot and war-mongering in Washington proves how divided and unstable the US is. There is nothing remotely like this going on in Russia, or in most major countries. If you want to understand what is going on in US politics, Greenwald’s daily broadcast is excellent.
Greenwald shows a 3-month old clip (starts at 31.14) of Johnson interrogating one of the chief vampires oppressing the American people, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, henchman of the deep state, depriving Americans of their civil rights, trying to turn the US into an Orwellian nightmare, and flooding the US with illegal immigrants. Johnson is outraged that Mayorkas was part of the successful FBI effort to force US social media companies to censor free speech, a direct violation of the US constitution. Once Johnson is done with him, Mayorkas is a smoking cinder, exposed for all the world to see what he really is, an enemy of truth and freedom, one of the above mentioned cockroaches.
Before anyone gets excited that revolution is coming to Washington, understand that the speaker’s job is not to be in the vanguard, rather to build consensus in order to pass legislation. Nonetheless, the fact that a young man with the right ideas is in charge is encouraging. Three months ago, nobody would have predicted this reformer would be speaker today, but because of the deep divisions in the Republican party, and numerous failed candidates and votes over the last three weeks, fate took an improbable turn. Johnson has a strong Christian faith. In his acceptance speech, he spoke about how unexpected it was that he had been elected, the only explanation being God’s will. It’s a good speech, and worth watching to get a sense of this new generation of US politicians.
Regarding Russia, Johnson is strongly in the camp of Republicans against further aid to Ukraine, a win for Russia. Like every DC lawmaker and candidate, he has no choice other than to be 110% pro-Israel, so strong is that country’s lobby’s chokehold on Washington, despite the fact that public opinion is turning against Israel, as it is against Ukraine, an interesting collision in the making.
Paradoxically, the Israel crisis has given the deep state war-mongers an opportunity to stuff even more money into Ukraine. Their tool, the senile fake president Biden, has sent a single bill to Congress asking for funding for both wars, cynically calculating that congressmen, terrified of the Israel lobby (which also loves sending money to Ukraine), will have no choice but to approve. Yes, these are the kinds of silly games played in Washington.
It will be interesting to see if the new speaker can diffuse this stink bomb, and respond with bills which separate the funding. In his acceptance speech, Johnson announced that the first bill he would put up for vote would be funding for Israel. In Washington, this slavish and humiliating groveling before the Israel lobby is not in fact indicative of what a man really believes, it is simply the cost of being in the game. Rapidly rising presidential candidate Robert Kennedy has been doing the same thing, and the undisputed world champ in this Kabuki is Trump himself.
